You wouldn’t think that a film about Cancer would manage to be funny and moving in equal measures but Bosom Buddies managed to achieve this difficult combination. This was the heart-warming story of a group of ordinary women in Hartlepool who had been thrown together for one simple reason – they have all had breast cancer. The Pansies support group had been founded by Isobel and the film was based around their weekly meetings at the Grand Hotel in Hartlepool. What emerges is a portrait that discovers “the extraordinary in the apparently ordinary” – these women are remarkable in the way they face up to adversity. Laughing together, crying together, Bosom Buddies is a moving tribute to survival, hope, laughter, death. And, above all, it is a film about enduring friend- ship and love.
